This muslin textile is from the Bengal region (Bangladesh and West Bengal). Due to colonization, the industry for Jamdani severely declined as a result of heavy import taxes favoring industrial manufacturing. Recently there is a resurgence of this handcrafted textile, and I'm very glad as it is light and bright and perfect to recreate as statment jewelry.
The red and white combination commonly found in the Bengali Garad Saree was a heavy inspiration for the color palette of these earrings. The Garad Saree usually has a white base with red borders and motifs which I recreated with clay.
Doing embroidery with clay is one of my favorite techniques and being able to revision the beautiful textiles of South Asia with this technique is probably the most rewarding. Though tedious, the end result is so realistic!
